The Red Velvet - The Perfect Red Velvet - The 2nd Album Repackaged

The Perfect Red Velvet gave me extreme whiplash at first going from 90’s R&B vibes to more modern upbeat synth-pop, but somehow it actually works really well together. The album feels nostalgic while still sounding fresh, and it ended up being the kind of album I could throw on while doing basically anything.

“Peek-A-Boo” and “Perfect 10” were my biggest standouts, but “I Just” was probably the hidden gem for me. I also really liked “Attaboy” more with each listen. Vocally, this album is really strong. Joy and Wendy especially stood out to me in the second verse of “Perfect 10,” but honestly all of Red Velvet’s vocals blend together so well throughout the album.

I’m still not fully sure if there’s meant to be one clear concept tying the album together, but I kept picking up themes of crushes, relationships, and breakups throughout the tracks. Whether there was an intentional storyline or not, the album still flows surprisingly well despite jumping between different sounds and styles.

I already liked Red Velvet before listening to this album, but sitting down and listening to it more closely definitely gave me an even bigger appreciation for their vocals and how well they adapt to different genres. I wouldn’t say I had a huge emotional reaction to it, but the 90’s R&B influence gave me a lot of nostalgia while listening.

I'd give this album an overall score of 8.5/10.
